Biocides are classified as preparations containing one or more active substances, intended to destroy or prevent the action of any harmful organism by chemical or biological means. The term biocide is also commonly used as synonym of antimicrobial agents or disinfectant/sanitizers (1).

Chemical biocides are effective because they seriously disrupt central vitally important functions of all living cells. Vegetative forms of bacteria, especially in their growth phase, are most susceptible to biocidal actions, while bacterial spores of certain species are the least susceptible and are unlikely to be affected by most biocidal applications (2).

For example, QACs or Quaternary Ammonium Compounds disrupt cell membranes leading to breakdown of transport and control functions of membranes. This affects vegetative cells of bacteria and fungi, and membrane-bound enveloped viruses, but is much less likely to kill non-enveloped viruses or spores. Gram-negative pathogens, with thick outer membranes and glycolipid endotoxin components, are also less affected by QACs, though Gram-positive cocci (like food-poisoning staphylococci) are very susceptible (3).
